Mathematician and physicist Joseph Larmour was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Queen’s College, Belfast and at Cambridge. Between 1880 and 1885 he was professor of natural philosophy at Queen’s College, Galway and in the latter year returned to Cambridge as lecturer in mathematics. In 1903 he was appointed Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge and remained in the post until 1932. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1892, he served as secretary (1901–1912) and vice-president (1912–1914). He received honorary degrees from the universities of Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Dublin, Durham, Glasgow, Oxford and St Andrew’s. In 1909 he was awarded a knighthood. He was also Unionist MP for Cambridge University (1911–1922).
