Inscription on separate gilt label: 'Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell Secretary, 1903–1935. Painted by William Nicholson, 1872–1949. Presented to the Society by Fellows and Friends on his retirement. April 29th 1935'. Signed 'Nicholson' in lower right corner. The sitter is holding a cigarette and the green `splodge’ behind him is a map of Whipsnade – a major legacy of his time as Secretary at ZSL. Mitchell was the candidate of the Fellows and won an election to be Secretary, rather than been simply appointed. Chalmers Mitchell's legacy at London Zoo was the programme of building new animal houses, most of which are still in use. He was influenced by the German animal dealer, Carl Hagenbeck, who maintained captive animals do better in the open air than in heated cages, and throughout his long tenure at the Zoo, Mitchell instigated several major building programmes that reflected this theory.
