Rebecca Orpen (1830–1923) was a talented amateur artist who lived at Baddesley Clinton, Warwickshire. She shared the house with her first husband, Marmion Edward Ferrers (1813– 1884) and Edward Heneage Dering (1826–1892), later her second husband, who was originally married to her aunt, Georgiana Chatterton (1806–1876). They were known as ‘The Quartet’, together enjoying art, history and their religion. She painted this portrait in imitation of the old style of early seventeenth-century English painting, on wooden panel and complete with inscriptions of age and date in gold lettering, and a coat of arms of the sitter. Sir Ralph Ellerker of Risby in Yorkshire was an ancestor of the maternal grandmother of the artist's first husband.
