Sir Thomas owned estates around his home at Felix Hall, Rivenhall (no longer standing). He inherited the title of baronet in 1864, was from 1865 the first Liberal MP for North Essex, and Lord Lieutenant of Essex from 1869. This portrait was presented to him by his Essex and Suffolk tenants.

Sir Francis Grant was a fashionable portrait painter, and was later President of the Royal Academy (PRA).
