John Hayls was a rival of Sir Peter Lely who was the most fashionable and highly regarded portrait painter of his time. Today Hayls is virtually unknown. In contrast to many other fashionable portrait painters his work was not at all showy. It relies instead on close observation of the subject, giving a stronger impression of the individual.
