Barker is an artist, a renowned yachtsman and yacht designer. This painting was worked up from sketches which were completed as part of a diary he kept whilst he circumnavigated Antarctica in a yacht he had built himself. Although born in England, Barker grew up in New Zealand where he studied art at Auckland University. He has since taught in Australia, New Zealand and British Colombia. He has travelled widely in search of ever more varied and diverse subjects to paint and draw, including the tropics, the Arctic and Antarctic, North America and Europe.
