This painting of the famous Gaelic poet, Sorley Maclean, was part of Peter Edwards’ solo exhibition ‘Contemporary Poets’ shown at the National Portrait Gallery (London) in 1990.

Edwards considers himself more of a figure painter than a portrait painter. He aims not just for a likeness of the person but in this case a painting of what the man and his poetry meant to him personally. He has painted Maclean out in the landscape that is so central to his poetry.
