In the second half of the seventeenth century the low lying swamp in West Drayton was drained to form the village green. For a century before there had been some development at its south-eastern corner. On the higher ground there were three small Tudor farmhouses. One of these was in the rear portion of what is known as 'Southlands'. This farmhouse was owned by the Cawdrey family. George Cawdrey was occupying the house and farming the surrounding land by the end of the seventeenth century. The house and land was owned by the Cawdrey family and their descendents for 250 years. In the eighteenth century the house was enlarged into a fine Georgian style residence. Other remodelling took place in the nineteenth century. The house still has its red brick Georgian frontage.
