St George’s Hospital was established in Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner in 1733. As was the case with the Foundling Hospital, Lanesborough House was felt to be an ideal location from the point of view of public health as it was on the edge of London next to open countryside. Wilson donated this work to the Foundling Hospital along with another landscape painting of the Hospital itself. The pair were painted for the Court Room at the Hospital for display alongside six other roundels of London hospitals and educational institutions. The Court Room was one of the first public spaces for the exhibition of art and therefore a major opportunity for British artists to attract wealthy patrons. Wilson intended these paintings to be an advert for his skills as an estate and classical landscape artist.
