'Staithes Lock Gates' are a sculptural representation of lock gates, set at the entrance to a new residential estate close to the Port of Tyne. The sculpture comprises stone pillars with blue painted metal cogs to each side and blue-painted metal-framed wooden gates. The gates are made up of carved wooden panels, at the top, the words, 'WELCOME TO THE STAITHES' are engraved and in black across both gates. Each panel depicts scenes relating to the docks and shipyard industry of South Shields. The artist worked with local school children on the design and the wooden plaques with numbers and heritage symbolism for each of the new houses.
