This painting shows celebrations outside Chesterfield's market hall in 1881, marking the centenary of George Stephenson's birth. Further celebrations were held in Chesterfield in 1948, the centenary of his death. George Stephenson established the Clay Cross Coal & Iron Company and opened pits at Tapton, Brimington and Newbold. He lived in Chesterfield from 1938 until his death in 1948.
