Born in Liverpool, Alexander Mackenzie studied at Liverpool College of Art (1946–1950). 'Still Life (Buoys), Kehelland, Cornwall' was painted in 1951, the year that Mackenzie moved from Liverpool to Cornwall. Mackenzie had family connections with Kehelland, where he had holidayed as a child, and he lived there until he moved to Newlyn in 1953. Depicting abandoned buoys the work is painted in gouache and demonstrates Mackenzie's precise draughtsmanship and his interest in creating highly textured surfaces.
