Paolo Porpora was one of the leading still life painters of the Neapolitan Baroque, a style of painting associated with dramatic lighting and compositions. This rich and sparkling still life of flowers shows his skilful naturalism in dealing with a profusion of carnations, tulips, tuberoses, cornflowers, roses and sunflowers. Although born in Naples, the artist moved to Rome in the 1650s where he worked for the powerful papal Chigi family.
