This painting depicts a dark interior with a small table along the bottom with a small framed picture, a conch shell in the foreground, and a smaller seashell at the back in front of a mirror and an autumn maple leaf to the right. Along the top edge there is a cupboard and a bare illuminated bulb dangling from its cable. It was painted in the artist’s attic studio and was one of a series of pictures using objects collected from the beaches and riverbanks around Berwickshire. This collection of found objects developed and expanded into a large assortment of items the artist is still using in still lifes to this day. Indeed, the zig-zag tile in the painting has featured again in a number of recent works. The light bulb and the cupboard at the top of the painting were features in the small attic studio and were often used to identify the place where the pictures were painted as well as the restricted light source in the space.
