Albert Julius Olsson studied painting in London before arriving in St Ives in 1886 at the age of 26. In the 1890s, he exhibited with the Newlyn painters and became a prolific exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He built up a reputation for painting moonlit seascapes, often romantic in style, yet displaying many of the lessons of Impressionism. In 1888, an artists' club was established as a meeting place for sea painters such as Olsson, Arnesby Brown, Adrian Stokes and Algernon Talmage. For these artists, the study of the figure became secondary to the beauty of the sea and its changing character. Olsson worked from a studio overlooking Porthmeor beach and in 1895, with Louis Grier, founded a School of Landscape and Marine Painting; among his students was Borlase Smart.
