Thomas Stothard became a student of the Royal Academy in 1778 and was made a full academician in 1794. The 'Rape of the Lock' is a mock-heroic narrative poem written by Alexander Pope (1688–1744), first published in 1712. The poem satirises a petty squabble by comparing it to the epic world of the gods. In this way Pope is criticising the over-reaction of contemporary society to trivial things.
