The artist studied under Robert Scott Lauder, one of the original members of the Royal Scottish Academy. He concentrated largely on portraiture in his early career before turning his focus to landscapes. A number of his landscapes are in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. He became a full member of Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 but tragically died in 1878, aged only 45. His own portrait, an etching by John Pettie, is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. This work is a study for a portrait of an unknown sitter. Possibly not a formal sitting due to the posture and dress of the girl, it instead reflects a more romantic view of childhood as the girl leans on her hand and lets her book drop in reverie and daydream as the title suggests.
