In 1986 Willing explained that this painting 'recalls when I was a small boy and took great delight in going backwards and forwards on a swing, upside down. What was marvellous about that was the disorientation. You had the impression that the world was swinging, not you. Later I discovered that the 'hanged man' card in the tarot pack is an upside down figure, representing chaos. So there seemed a connection. It is chaotic if the whole world is moving.'
