A biblical scene depicting the Annunciation, which marks the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he tells her that she is to be the mother of Jesus. Mary is shown accepting the news that she will bear Christ; her head is bowed in humility and acceptance. Between the figure of Mary and the angel Gabriel is an urn of lilies – the lily often appears as a symbol of Mary's purity.
