This is the earliest of panels in Nottingham City Museums’ collection. Images of the Virgin Mary were incredibly popular in the medieval church. She was venerated as the mother of Christ and for the miracles of the immaculate conception and the virgin birth. Mary’s reward for accepting the role of mother of Christ was her assumption into heaven, body and soul. There she was crowned queen of heaven. The angel Gabriel is shown greeting the Virgin and holding in his hand a scroll which was originally painted with the words of his salutation. The Virgin is seated and holds open the Old Testament at the famous prophecy of Isaiah. The three lilies in a vase symbolise purity.
