The sitters in 'The Birthday' are George Harcourt's wife and fellow artist, Mary Lascelles Leesmith Harcourt and their children. The eldest daughter Mary Edeva and son George are to Mary Lascelles left and Elizabeth Aletha (seated) and Dorothy Anne (standing) to her right. The painting features a Dutch tapestry that still hangs in Hospitalfield House in Arbroath today, so was mostly likely started during Harcourt's time there. Hospitalfield is site of the art school where George Harcourt taught from 1901 to 1909 as governor of the Patrick Allan-Fraser School of Art there.
