Freedom of the City or Town is an ancient honour granted to martial organisations, allowing them the privilege to march into the City with drums beating, olours flying, and bayonets fixed'. It is an entirely ceremonial honour, but remains the oldest and one of the highest civic honours.

The town of Perth is at the centre of the Regimental area, which has included of Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perth and Kinross since 1881. Perth was the home of the Regimental Depot (including the Museum) until 1961, and continues to be the home of the Regimental Headquarters and Museum.
