Henry Treffry Dunn was born in Truro and studied at Heatherley's. He was recommended as studio assistant to Dante Gabriel Rossetti by Walter Howel Deverell, a position he held for 20 years. After Rossetti's death Dunn fell into poverty and alcoholism, but he was rescued by the charitable Clara Watts-Dunton, who looked after him at The Pines in Putney, as she had done with Swinburne.
