Born in Westphalia, Germany, Rustige studied in Düsseldorf. He travelled and painted in the cultural centres of Europe including Vienna, Paris, Dresden and London. He followed a career typical of an ‘academic’ painter, specialising in subjects from history and peasant genre scenes.

His paintings combine historical anecdote with romantic landscape. They typify the romantic landscapes popular throughout mainland Europe, which became popular in Britain after Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. It has been suggested that the ruin on the distant hilltop could be Metternich Castle, Beilstein.
