A letter from Houthuesen to Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, confirms that this is a portrait of Welsh collier William Jones, whom the artist met when Jones was on his way home from work at the pit. Houthuesen found a small shed to sit in and painted the portrait with light only from the open door. Many people came to watch, crowding the door until it was difficult to work. Jones died of consumption not long afterwards.
