Edwin Long was born at Kelston, near Bath and worked locally as a portrait painter. He moved to London in the 1850s and became a very successful artist, painting Middle Eastern scenes showing beautiful young women. Long's biblical and historical scenes were particularly popular. 'The Cousins' was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856 with the title 'Portrait of two young ladies, sisters'. The sitters were Bath-based cousins. Records show the seated lady is Miss Caroline Watson of Brock Street. One of the cousins was reputed to have been a fine pianist who played locally at the Guildhall and Assembly Rooms. Though living in London, Long never forgot his place of birth; in the 1880s he moved into an imposing house which he called 'Kelston'.
