William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland was a younger son of King George II. He was a soldier and politician, but is probably best remembered for his role in putting down the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. When the Highland Clans rose in favour of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), Cumberland was ordered to quell the uprising. After defeating the Jacobite Army at the Battle of Culloden (16th April 1746), which this portrait my have been commissioned to celebrate, he punished the Highlanders for their support of Charles, arresting suspected rebels, burning settlements, and confiscating livestock. His ruthless measures earned him the nickname ‘Butcher Cumberland’.
