This painting shows the passenger/cargo ship 'Earl of Zetland' sailing south from Burravoe, in a late summer rural setting. At the time of painting, the 'Earl' had recently (1974) been decommissioned as the North Isles Supply Ship, having visited Yell three times every week, weather permitting, since 1945. She still survives, as a floating restaurant, on the river Tyne at North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Robson was trained at Edinburgh College of Art, and became an art teacher in 1953. He was a prolific artist, selling more than 900 works, as well as writing three books. He was also a first-class rugby player, winning 22 international caps with the Scotland team between 1954 and 1960. Robson's connection with Yell was through his mother who was born in Cullivoe.
