In summer 1897 Laura Knight visited the artists’ colony at Staithes with her future husband and fellow artist Harold Knight. They returned the following year and settled there in 1900. Laura was influenced by a number of the painters at Staithes, including Fred Jackson. Laura was also an admirer of Edward Stott’s work and he purchased her first Royal Academy painting ‘Mother and Child’ in 1903. In 1907 the Knights moved to Newlyn and Laura’s artistic reputation grew during her years in Cornwall. In 1919 she established a studio in London and later became famous for her circus and theatre paintings. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1929 and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1936.
