Frank Salisbury specialised in portraits, murals, and stained glass. At the height of his career he was known as 'Britain's Painter Laureate'. His sitters were the leading figures of his day and included George V, Winston Churchill, Mussolini, and five Presidents of the USA. His speciality was large canvases of historical and ceremonial events.

This painting was commissioned by John Siddeley of the Armstrong-Siddeley motor company. It shows his daughter driving one of the cars made by the company.
