Christ is shown in the centre of the panel seated on a donkey, his right hand raised in blessing. His triumphant entry into Jerusalem was his first public declaration of his role as spiritual leader, ‘King of the Jews’. The carver of the panel has crammed the available space with figures and detail to give a sense of the large crowd who greeted Jesus waving branches of palm and willow. Within a few days, the crowd were baying for Christ to be crucified.
