It is uncertain when John Noble Barlow first arrived in St Ives, but it was probably during the 1890s. He was known as a landscape painter and had previously studied in Paris. Though he worked mainly in St Ives, he also painted with the artists' colony at Lamorna and was a teacher to Charles W. Simpson. He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy after 1893.
