The Bosnian War (1992–1995) was the bloodiest in Europe since World War II. The bitter ethnic conflict left a country deeply divided between the Serb, Croat and Bosniak populations. At the height of the war in 1993 the famed old Turkish bridge at Mostar tumbled into the waters of the Neretva River it signalled the end of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The 16th century Stari Most (Old Bridge) that gave Mostar, Bosnia's southern tourist attraction, its name was the most cherished monument of the multi-ethnic republic and one of the last important traces of more than 500 years of Ottoman-Turkish rule. This work by Steve Cross was one of a series made after the artist visited Mostar following the end of the war.
