The painting is from David Allan's ten-year stay in Italy, when he was supported by several of the aristocratic families of Clackmannanshire. While there, he was awarded a gold medal of the Academy of St Luke in Rome, the first Scottish painter since Gavin Hamilton to receive the award. This small and rather dark work shows a family group of elderly man, mother with suckling baby and small child, as well as a dog. Vesuvius can be seen in the background.
