Peter Howson is noted for his powerful images of violence and aggression, whether in the war-torn Balkan states or, as here, among the criminal gangs of Glasgow. Their muscles exaggerated and distorted, their faces by turns vacuous and vicious, Howson’s closely-observed gangsters transcend realism, providing a nightmare vision of brutality akin to those conjured up by Goya. The horrors of war in modern Europe so graphically depicted by Howson have many parallels in written accounts of the religious and civil wars of Scotland in earlier ages. Persecution and prejudice, betrayal and revenge have all played their part in Scottish history, especially during the Reformation, the witch-hunts of the seventeenth century, the Jacobite rebellions and the Highland Clearances.
