Emmeline Deane was born in Bath, the youngest of 13 children in a mildly bohemian family. Of this large family, several others were writers or artists. This tendency was carried on in the next generation; one of her nephews was the writer P. G. Wodehouse.

Emmeline Deane insisted on art training, and thus was sent to Paris. She exhibited several times at the Royal Academy. She never married and was fortunate enough to have the time and money to travel around Europe, painting wherever she went.
