Born in London, George Clausen studied at the South Kensington Schools between 1873 and 1875 and later in Antwerp where he was encouraged to paint out of doors, sketching in the fishing villages along the Dutch coast. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1876. From 1880, Clausen developed an awareness Jules Bastien-Lepage’s naturalistic style having seen an exhibition of his work in London and became a leading convert, particularly after travelling to Brittany in the summer of 1882. He spent much of his working life in the Essex countryside, which provided the material for many of his paintings. In 1904 he became Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy and was knighted after the completion of a mural for the Houses of Parliament in 1926.
