This is a copy of the most celebrated composition by Bonheur, the prime version of which was worked on between 1852–1855. It was first shown at the Salon in 1853, to great acclaim, and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. That painting is over five metres wide, and there is also a half-size replica, made to facilitate prints, from 1855 in the National Gallery, London.

This copy was made for the film 'National Velvet'.
