Three angels are seated around a table with food and drink before them. Above the central angel are the words 'The Hospitality of Abraham'. The scene illustrates an incident in Genesis 18 where three strangers (angels on their way to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah) arrive at Abraham's tent and he shows them hospitality. But the scene has greater significance in the Greek Church were the three angels are regarded as symbols of the Trinity. That this is how this icon is to be interpreted is clear from the fact that its iconography is based on 'The Old Testament Trinity', a masterpiece by Russia's great icon painter, Andrei Rublev (1360?–1430).
