John Downton created this portrait from both observation and imagination. He produced several versions which were heavily influenced by Renaissance portraits. In this version he has simplified the lines and exaggerated the features. Ironically these are characteristics of Modernist art, which Downton disliked.

Downton believed that art had died when Modernism arrived. He felt that he was reviving Renaissance values by making paintings with Renaissance materials and techniques.
