In the right foreground, standing on a wooden slope leading from a wooden quay wall to the beach, are several figures. On the extreme right is a woman clasping her hands, an elderly sailor holds on to his sou'wester hat and two women in aprons and headscarves, one holding the hand of a small boy. All the figures are looking towards the left background of the picture, where several men are hauling in and securing a boat. The weather is bad, as the figures are holding onto their hats, and their clothes are blowing about. In the distance are gulls in the wind. At the top of the picture, on the quayside, are boats lined up, with men securing them against the weather; behind them are the fisherfolk's cottages.
