Older works in Lews Castle College’s collection relate to its historical connections. The College was originally located in Lews Castle itself, where paintings, part of a putative Brahan collection, were housed. Brahan Castle in Easter Ross (near Inverness) was the seat of the Seaforth Mackenzies who had owned the Isle of Lewis. Two of the paintings depict the library of Brahan Castle. However, it is not clear how these (and the Seaforth family portraits) travelled from Brahan Castle to Lews Castle, given that they were painted after the Seaforths had sold the Isle of Lewis.
