The ray of moonlight appearing in the middle of this picture is a dramatic light effect which would have had a special appeal for Branwell Brontë, recalling, as it does, his interest in the work of John Martin. The subject may relate to his knowledge of Edwin Landseer's paintings such as 'The Old Shepherd's Chief Mourner', known widely through prints. For many years the painting was owned by Alfred Harris, a Bradford banker, Quaker and wealthy art collector, who had frequent contact with local artists such as Branwell.

The poor condition of the painting and its overall dark tones make it impossible to identify details.
