At the time he painted ‘The Moorhen’s Nest’ Brownlow lived in a cottage next to the school in Belchamp Walter in Essex, three miles west of Sudbury. The name of the little boy was Felton (thought to be John Felton) and the little girl was Mary Ann Ives (later known by her married name of Mary Ann Wright). Her daughter, Mrs Mary Chatters, who lived at ‘Ashcroft’, Belchamp Walter, well remembered her mother speaking of going with Brownlow to the lake east of Belchamp Walter Church (locally known as the 'Canal') and posing for the painting. Mrs. Wright was born in 1864.
