Corot painted this atmospheric scene in the 1860s. Its combination of observation and idealisation reflect his maxim: 'In nature seek first of all form; then tones, colour and technique; everything should then be subjected to the sentiment which you experienced. Before any landscape we are moved by a kind of elegant grace. Never abandon it, and while seeking truth and accuracy, submit to that first impression. If we have been moved, the sincerity of our feelings will be passed on'. Gwendoline Davies purchased this work in 1908.
