Disappointed hopes; a woman is seen standing outside a post office holding a child. Under an arch two women can be seen looking on. Webster exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1823 to 1879 specialising in paintings of children at play. He was one of a group of English Painters who emulated the style of the seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish masters. This is the only Haworth Bequest picture with an overtly sad theme.
