Henrietta Ward was the most successful female painter of her day. From an artistic family, her first drawing was accepted at the Royal Academy when she was only fourteen. Gradually Ward emerged primarily as a historical painter and generally received the approval of the critics, although sometimes she was criticised as a woman for not devoting more attention to less challenging domestic works. Women artists in the Victorian period were increasing in number and levels of success, but still faced discrimination; painting was an acceptable hobby, but as a career was still frowned upon and full membership to organisations such as the Royal Academy remained restricted to men.
