Mountainous scenery with, in the foreground, three children. There is a girl in a green shawl, a blond boy in a yellow shirt, and a girl in a red cloak and blue skirt with an open book on her lap. They are playing with a sheep and lamb. Nearby are a sheepdog and black puppy, and a walking stick and red kerchief lie on the grass. Behind the children is a dead bush, or low tree, and further back is a group of grazing sheep. The background shows a vast landscape, with, on the left, a valley and a river with wooded banks. There are also huge crags overgrown with yellow moss. In the distance are snow-capped mountain peaks. From the bottom left corner, up to the centre top, is a rainbow. The artist said, in 1894, about the work: "It was painted on the hills above Capel Curig and I remained all winter there to get the detail for the spring foliage for I intend it to be very early spring – say early in May in that high situation.
