This painting depicts the artist’s wife, whilst she was pregnant with their second son. She ran away when her children were small, and although she later returned, the artist would not take her back. She disappeared again and it is thought she died in childbirth in Ireland in 1921. The artist was besotted with his wife, and never truly recovered from her departure. He rarely mentioned his paintings or drawings of her, even to his family.
