Robin Wallace’s work can be characterised as impressionistic with a clear concern for the interplay of form and colour. This work is no exception. The eponymous villa appears as a single red mass broken up by the greys and blue-greens of the trees. Wallace usually draws attention to the sky but here it is largely obscured by the other elements of the composition. Wallace was born in Kendal in the Lake District. After serving in the First World War, he studied art at the Byam Shaw School of Art where he remained until 1926. Many of his early paintings depict the Cumbria of his youth and he became a successful landscape artist. He eventually settled in London where he taught art at Channing School in Highgate and remained a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy.
